Yours Homely was created by home decor lovers who were frustrated with the overwhelming, impractical, and out-of-touch interior design advice found online.
Welcome! My name is Daniel Carter and I created Yours Homely because, like so many people, I have a deep love for making a home feel truly special. My journey started back in 2017 when I bought my first home in Austin, Texas – four blank walls, mismatched furniture, and absolutely no idea where to begin.
As a high school art teacher, I had an eye for color and composition, but translating that into a real living space was a whole different challenge. I spent hours scrolling through design blogs and Pinterest boards, only to find advice that was either too expensive, too complicated, or just completely out of touch with how real people actually live.
That’s when I decided to figure it out myself. I started experimenting, testing different decor styles, repurposing furniture, mixing patterns, and learning what actually works in a real home on a real budget. Little did I know how deep the rabbit hole goes!
Along the way, I started sharing my experiences in online communities and forums. What I found was that thousands of homeowners and renters were facing the exact same problem. They wanted a beautiful home but couldn’t find honest, practical, and down-to-earth guidance to help them get there.
I’m not an interior designer by trade or a certified decorator (I like to call myself a self-taught decor enthusiast). However, I am passionate about building a space where real people get real advice, and that is exactly what Yours Homely is all about.
Our mission is to help you turn your house into a home you absolutely love! The guides and ideas I’ve put together are the ones I wish I had when I first started, and I genuinely hope they make your journey a little easier and a lot more fun.

Daniel still remembers the exact moment he fell in love with interior design, standing in the middle of his empty living room, paintbrush in hand, realizing that a single wall color could completely transform a space. Since that day, he has never looked back.
Based in Austin, Texas, Daniel brings a creative teacher’s eye and a deeply practical approach to every piece of content on Yours Homely. He believes that great design isn’t about spending more, it’s about choosing better. When he’s not writing or rearranging furniture for the fifth time, you’ll find him hunting for hidden gems at local flea markets, hiking the Barton Creek Greenbelt, or hosting friends for his famous Sunday dinners.
Daniel personally oversees every article published on Yours Homely, making sure the advice is honest, actionable, and accessible to anyone, whether you’re a first-time renter or a seasoned homeowner.
Sarah Mitchell
Sarah grew up watching her mother transform thrift store finds into stunning centerpieces, and that early lesson, that style has nothing to do with price tags, has shaped everything she does.
A self-described “maximalist with minimalist tendencies,” Sarah has spent years helping homeowners across the Pacific Northwest find their unique design voice. She has a particular love for layering textures, mixing vintage and modern pieces, and finding creative ways to bring warmth into any space. At Yours Homely, Sarah focuses on bedroom, bathroom, and interior design content.
Marcus Webb
Marcus is the guy who can walk into a hardware store and come out with everything needed to build a bookshelf, reupholster a chair, and refresh a kitchen, all in one weekend.
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Marcus spent several years working in home renovation before pivoting to writing about it. He has a talent for breaking down ideas into simple, approachable lists that even a complete beginner can follow with confidence.
